Packed with high-energy dance numbers, unforgettable songs including When I Grow Upand Naughty, and more than a few pranks, Matilda the Musical has taken the world by storm. The show has travelled to 91 cities, won over 100 international awards (including 24 for Best Musical), and delighted more than 11 million audience members worldwide.
Now, it’s Wellington’s turn to join the rebellion.
At the heart of the story is Matilda, an extraordinary little girl with a vivid imagination, sharp mind, and surprising psychokinetic powers. With the help of her kind teacher Miss Honey — and a motley crew of “revolting children” — she dares to take a stand against the terrifying Miss Trunchbull and change her own destiny.
Wellington’s wealth of world-class talent and exceptional young performers — as seen in the recent production of Mamma Mia! — will bring Roald Dahl’s iconic characters to gloriously mischievous life. From chocolate-cake chaos to alphabet acrobatics, audiences can expect a riot of colour, comedy, and courage.
The production will be directed and choreographed by Hamish Mouat, who helmed the sold-out Auckland season of Matilda, with musical direction by Michael Nicholas Williams, whose impressive credits include Sweeney Todd (Downstage Theatre), the Australian tour of Blood Brothers, and Ken Hill’s Phantom of the Opera in Japan.
