Watch: Can Lady Gaga save House of Gucci?

The film is a retelling of the murder of Maurizio Gucci by his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani. Beginning in 1978 the film covers the couple’s romance and marriage, his takeover of the Gucci empire, and ultimately how the whole relationship ended in tragedy.

I was impressed with Gaga’s portrayal of Reggiani – in fact she is the highlight of the film, most of the cast manage to keep up with her, but Jared Leto portrayal of Paolo Gucci is cringeworthy.

Despite being about one of the world’s most dynamic fashion families, there is bugger all fashion in it. Most scenes are too long and frankly incredibly boring. The entire family is portrayed as unpleasant and ruthless, so there is no one you can root for in the story.

There are two moments that stand out – a disco scene early in the film, and a fashion show featuring Tom Ford’s contribution to the Gucci empire towards the end. These two fabulous moments unfortunately highlight the mundanity of the rest of the film.

If you are expecting the kind of excellent fashion/drama of Netflix’s Halston, you are going to be disappointed.

So how did I score it?
