Review: Sincere Apologies

Saying sorry is probably one of the hardest things a human being can do yet when genuine an apology can have profound effects on those involved. Sincere Apologies is a theatrical experience that shares 50 attempts at atonement from a slew of people including politicians, celebrities and ordinary people.

The audience at this show is seated in three circles and the intention is that individuals within the assembled people take turns at a microphone to read the various apologies.

The apologies themselves are an intriguing mix and were a collation of emails, social media posts, statements, press conferences, and speeches. Many were heartfelt, some mocking, others very funny, and some deeply resonant.

The first apology was from Amber Heard and Johnny Depp for bringing their dogs illegally into Australia which started things off on an amusing tone. Several corporations were included and though each recognised the value of saying sorry they were all blandly uniform in their language and tone, which is a necessary but probably not sincere way of appeasing disgruntled customers.

As well as the Hurt/Depp attempt, other celebrities weighed in including some bizarre and amusing rants by Kanye West and even a non apology from Connor McGregor.

Politicians of course are not immune to having to say sorry, but some of these were incredibly potent. Two by Jacinda Ardern stood out – her apology to Waikato iwi for the invasion in the 1860s and to the Muslim community over the terrorist attacks were incredibly powerful.

The most touching and relatable were several by ordinary people apologising for missing a party or crashing a car, disrespecting someone.

Sincere Apologies is an interesting concept and one that creates a very intimate and shared experience for the audience. In seeing the widely different ways and types of apologies people make, we get a deep insight into the fundamentals of human relationships and interactions.
