Review: The Black Phone is spookily good

The film is set in 1978 is a supernatural horror/thriller about a serial child abductor known as The Grabber who kidnaps a number of young boys. One of his victims tries to outwit the killer by mysterious means.

Press play to watch my review:

This is a very good thriller, and while it uses some typical cheap shocks at times, it is actually well crafted and full of suspense. The cast work very well, particularly the two main kids who play brother and sister in the film. Ethan Hawke as the evil antagonist is creepily scary. There are some very funny and unexpected pieces of dialogue, and the entire tone of the film leaves the viewer really concerned with the potential outcome of the story.

While some of it is a little predictable, it doesn’t have enough mystery and intrigue to sustain you through it all.

So how did I score it?

Cinematography    7 /10
