Review: Trent Dalton’s Love Stories

Love Stories is the theatre version of Trent Dalton’s best-selling book of the same name. The project began when Dalton sat on a Brisbane street with an old typewriter and asked people to share their stories of love. The subsequent book was a hit, and now the stage production brings the wonderful anecdotes to life on stage.

Told by a talented and diverse cast, a modest set, and accompanied by wonderful music, these stories confirm what we know from experience – love is deep, complicated, messy, and sustaining. Each one of us has our own definition, and while similar, the range of emotions and the nuances between each experience are vast.

Dalton himself is represented on stage and his own story weaves through that of the people he interviewed. We meet a man who writes letters to his deceased wife, an elderly woman who finds love late in life, a young man adopted after the Rwandan genocide, and many others who find pain, redemption, and healing through the power of our most fundamental emotion.

What makes this production so endearing is its authenticity – these are real stories and they are presented simply and honestly by one hell of a talented bunch of actors. This is a wonderfully healing kind of show, and one that made me feel a lot better about our quirky species.
