Watch: Jennifer Hudson is a knock-out in ‘Respect’

The film is based on thirty years in the life of Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul. Covering her youth and career up until 1972.

Although chunks of time fly by, the film touches on very meaningful and dramatic times in the diva’s life and explores both the highs and very dark lows she experienced. It’s deeply emotional and incredibly well cast. Jennifer Hudson gives a remarkable performance as an adult Franklin and I must mention Skye Dakota Turner who is brilliant as the younger version of Aretha.

The story is well told, but at two hours and twenty-five minutes, it feels a little too long.

So how did I score it?
