Movie Review: The Great Escaper

The film is based on a true story about Bernie Jordan a British World War 2 veteran who at the age of 90 sneaks out of his retirement village and goes to France for the 70th anniversary of the D-Day landings.

Press play to watch the review:

This is a fascinating film with a steady pace that holds ones attention all the way through it.

There are nicely created flashbacks, and some very emotional scenes and plenty of gentle humour. Michael Caine as Jordan, and Glenda Jackson as his wife Rene are superb and give powerful performances.

The film clearly shows the horror of war but in a way that is not gratuitous. It also illustrates the redemptive power of forgiveness and the recognition that both sides suffer in war.

The Great Escaper is a must see, particularly as it is Jackson’s last movie role.

So how did I score it?

Acting  8 /10

Story/Script 8 /10

Cinematography    8 /10

Set/Costumes 8 /10

Entertainment value 8 /10

That gives The Great Escaper an average score of   8 / 10
