Trans weightlifter set to make history at Tokyo Olympics

Forty-three year old weightlifter Laurel Hubbard from New Zealand has been guaranteed a place in the women’s super heavyweight category at this years Olympic games. Under IOC guidelines, athletes who transition from male to female can compete in the women’s category without requiring surgery provided their total level of testosterone is below 10 nano moles per litre. If the game go ahead, Hubbard will be the first transgender athlete to compete at the Olympics. 


20 year old gay Iranian man killed by family  

Alireza Fazeli Monfared was a young Iranian man who was brutally killed by his brother and cousins for being gay. Alireza was trying to flee to Turkey to join his boyfriend in that country. According to his partner, Alireza was beheaded and his body dumped under a tree outside the city of Ahwaz. Iran is considered to be the most dangerous country on earth for gay men. 


Lesbian couple elected prom king and queen

A lesbian couple at an Ohio high school has been voted as prom king and queen. Annie Wise and her girlfriend Riley Loudermilk are both 18 years old and began dating six months ago. While delighted with their win, and supported by many, there were a lot of negative comments on the school’s Facebook page which had to be deleted. 


The Queen says UK government will ban conversion therapy

The Queen opened the UK parliament this week with a speech from the throne.  The speech, which outlines the government’s legislative programme, included the news that the government will introduce a bill to outlaw gay conversion therapy. The government will also look to fund more support to those in the community who have undergone the so-called treatment.
