Movie Review: Regretting You is sweet

Regretting You is a hybrid kind of film that combines some real adult drama with teenage coming of age angst and romance. The story centres around a strong but testy relationship between adolescent Clara (McKenna Grace) and her mum Morgan (Allison Williams) as the former tries to shake off her childhood and starts seeing a rather charming and mild ‘bad boy’ Miller (Mason Thames). When an unexpected tragedy occurs, hurtful secrets are revealed that threaten the most fundamental relationships in Clara’s life.

It sounds like a fairly typical teen drama but what gives the film depth is the authenticity and very strong performances of the cast, particularly from Grace. She in particular shows a great depth of emotion and complexity in creating the character of Clara. In some ways Miller seems a little too perfect, but Thames has enough charm and cheek to make Miller someone slightly unpredictable but likeable. In a similar vein, Williams manages to portray a mother who is fully rounded and not a saccharine stereotype.

The pacing of the film works really well and it is shot nicely.

Regretting You is a sweet film that should appeal to those who like a bit of family drama with a nice dose of humour sprinkle in.
