There are so many offerings at the New Zealanad Comedy Festival it can be very hard to choose, which is why I love the Best Comedy Show On Earth. Each year it serves up a buffet of comedic stars and this year’s set was very tasty.
The show was hosted by Pax Assadi who opened the show with some jokes about his family, his heritage and plenty of innuendo. Assadi is an affable, good humoured and charming comedian and even when he’s trying to be offensive he still comes across as a nice, if very funny guy.
He introduced nine comedians – some Kiwi, some Aussie and the very astute Takashi Wakasugi
from Japan who implored us all to be more consistent. His very funny set took the piss out of vegans, smokers, and anyone who uses an air fryer.
Kirsty Webeck admitted she was terrible with relationships and delivered a devastatingly funny ‘coming out’ segment which started out with the line ‘sorry guys I’m gay.”
Stand out moments included Ray O’Leary in his trademark deadpan delivery exploring the themes of autism, philosophy, funerals and even mattress protectors. The very funny Kajun Brooking delivering a series of one liners, the best of which involved getting a tattoo on his cock. And Brinley Stent giving a manic and hilarious impression of a home printer.
But perhaps the best, and certainly the most risqué was an incredibly funny set by Ocean Denham about pregnancy and abortion that was crude and incredibly funny, but not for the faint hearted.
The entire evening was superb and next year, I’d urge you to go and check what’s on offer in the next Best Comedy Show on Earth
