Kirsty Webeck is a comic from Australia who is a lesbian or as she says ‘sorry boys I’m gay, not that you’d notice.’ Her’s is a style of comedy that is observational and based on her own life. She doesn’t go in smut and she doesn’t believe in picking one her audience. She’s affable and very funny.
In Everything I Need to Say About Sea Creatures Webeck tells some personal anecdotes about her wife, her neighbours, and about being very lucky when she was younger. She then launched into the main thrust of her show – animals and the sea.
She explained that dolphins don’t deserve their squeaky clean reputation because they are basically hedonistic party animals. She gave hilarious advice on how to avoid a shark attack and how to get a pit bull from biting. When it came to dealing with large spiders lurking in your car her solution was a little less helpful and involves taking the kind of action only a stunt double should attempt.
She seemed fascinated by bears and had advice on how to react to different species of bear if they attack. In case any of the audience was puzzled why bears should be in a show about sea creatures, she reminded us that they can swim!
In the final part of the show she shared a traumatic whale watching experience off the coast of Western Australia and her love of octopuses and sea horses.
Webeck is charming, disarmingly funny and a great story teller. I think she’d make for an great dinner guest and is certainly a comedian I would love to see again.
