Watch: Why did ‘Coming Home in the Dark’ upset me?

This is a psychological thriller based on a short story by Owen Marshall where a family on holiday is captured and terrorised by a couple of psychotic killers in a remote part of New Zealand.

Press play to watch my review:

The story is quite simple and mostly follows the plot of the original story but the film goes a bit further by providing a back story that goes some way to explaining just why the villains are so messed up.

It’s a well-made film with an excellent cast, great cinematography, and it creates a very tense and visceral impact.

But. there is zero character development, and in the end, it is hard to really see why this story was told or indeed what moral lesson there is to learn.

So how did I score it?

Acting  8/10

Story/Script   7/10

Cinematography   8/10

Set/Costumes    8/10

Entertainment   7/10

That gives Coming Home in the Dark an average of  7.6 / 10
