Press Release: Naughty Drag Cabaret
The silly season is here early! Naughty: A Midwinter Christmas Drag Cabaret is a festive and fierce drag spectacular sure to make the Yuletide gay. Naughty is an original production – a high-quality, queer spectacular boasting outlandish costumes, high-octane numbers, and outrageous gags. The cabaret serves to poke fun at the absurdity of Christmas tropes, while delivering the iconic Christmas numbers we all know and love. It’s going to be unbe-wreath-able: a campy cabaret so raucous and raunchy, you’ll want to touch your elf.
The production features an all-star cast of Pinkie Promise (all-singing, all-dancing Broadway bimbo) and Medulla Oblongata (Aotearoa drag legend and former refugee from the Maldives). They are joined by then show’s producer Hugo Grrrl – who won House of Drag Season 1, making him the first drag king and transgender man to both star in and win a drag reality competition worldwide. Grrrl won an Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Award in 2020 for contribution to the arts, and was nominated for Wellingtonian of The Year in 2018.
During a time of anti-transphobic rhetoric and calls to ban the drag art form outright, Naughty stands as a testament to the resilience of queer art and artists. With a majority transgender cast, the production will feature themes of acceptance, love, and chosen family – ideas sure to resonate with all audience members.
