Movie review: The Son is a compelling and emotional film

This is the story of a teenage boy struggling with identity and his place in the world. He knows he is unwell, but cant seem to get his workaholic father to understand. Not sure where he belongs, he skips school and tries living with his divorced father and his new family.

Press play to watch the review:

This is an engaging film with a compelling story. The cast is superb, with Zen McGrath giving a riveting performance as a teenager in crisis. Hugh Jackman plays an aspiring politician who hasn’t really reconciled his own childhood very well.

Though a little slow in parts, The Son confront issues of mental health very well and sympathetically. This is not your standard Hollywood film, and has some very dramatic and unnerving moments, but it is a good watch.

So how did I score it?

Acting   8 /10

Story/Script 7 /10

Cinematography    7 /10

Set/Costumes   7/10

That gives The Son an average score of   7.2 / 10
