Foolish Wit Theatre, an independent, community-focused theatre
company established in 2015, is proud to present Amy Herzog’s contemporary
adaptation of Henrik Ibsen’s groundbreaking play, A Doll’s House. This powerful and
fast-paced 110-minute production will run from June 25th to 29th, 2025, at The
PumpHouse Theatre in Takapuna.
Henrik Ibsen’s 1879 premiere of A Doll’s House shocked audiences with its
unflinching exploration of gender roles and marriage, earning him the title of “the
father of modern drama.” Now, nearly 150 years later, acclaimed playwright Amy
Herzog breathes new life into this iconic story, creating an “electrifying revival”
praised by critics for honoring Ibsen’s bold spirit while captivating today’s audiences
with its fresh and dynamic approach.
The play follows Nora Helmer (Gabrielle Dally), who has spent years embodying the
ideal wife. Charming, devoted, and always prioritizing others, Nora’s seemingly
perfect marriage hides a long-buried secret that threatens to unravel everything she
holds dear. When the truth emerges, Nora is forced to confront the harsh realities of
marriage, identity, and independence, ultimately leading her to an unthinkable choice
that forever changed the landscape of theatre.Foolish Wit’s production promises to grip audiences from the first line, leaving them
questioning long after the final curtain. This gripping psychological drama shatters
the illusion of a perfect marriage and challenges perceptions of love and sacrifice.
